***The award-winning Laker Wellness Center!

Laker Secondary School has received a Michigan School Wellness Bronze Award! Awesome! Part  of the reason for this award is the presence of our great Laker Wellness Center! A special ceremony for winning schools took place May 13 at the Michigan State Capitol building, where Lakers received a plaque and a certificate. We are so appreciative of Scheurer Hospital for partnering with us in offering this service. Kudos to Brooke McNabb, RN, and Brenda Kretzschmer, nurse practitioner, both of Scheurer Hospital, and the volunteers who work at our wellness center.

***The Scheurer Wellness Clinic at Lakers helps students in a variety of ways, including providing helpful information that can improve their health - and their lives!

Pictured above are state Sen. Phil Pavlov, nurse practitioner Brenda Kretzschmer and RN Brooke McNabb of Scheurer Hospital/Laker Wellness Center, Laker Secondary School Principal Brian Keim and state Rep. Edward Canfield. They attended a healthy schools ceremony in May in Lansing, where Lakers was recognized for the work it does to promote student wellness. Thank you to Scheurer Hospital for partnering with the school to offer many of these school wellness services.

The Scheurer Wellness Clinic at Lakers is staffed by a registered nurse, with program oversight by a nurse practitioner. Daily services provided include the following:

The clinic is the result of a partnership between Scheurer Hospital and Laker Schools.

During the 2014-15 school year, Abby Knoblock, of Scheurer Hospital, offered half-hour exercise classes for  Laker Junior High students a few times a week. This was in addition to the PE class that junior high students take.

Laker JH/HS students take part in

health/wellness fair

(January 2015)

Scheurer Hospital staff, along with some Laker staff members, P-NUT program  representatives and community volunteers, operated informational/activity stations at two school health fairs during the 2014-15 school year. The events included about 16-20 stations, each one promoting healthy choices/lifestyles. Laker Secondary School health teacher Laurie Britt and her health class helped with the junior high/high school version. Secondary school students took a pre-test and a post-test to gauge how much they knew before the health fair about various health/nutrition topics and how much they learned from attending the fair. Both events were a great success.
